Now that we are down to the last two teams, the defending champion UConn Huskies remain the favorites to win the men's college basketball national title. Despite Zach Edey and the Boilermakers playing great basketball, the Huskies are considerably favorites as of Monday morning.
Purdue basketball's advancement to the Final Four isn't just the first for Painter, nor is it occurring just after the Boilermakers' shocking first-round exit in the 2023 NCAA Tournament. It's also the first time in a generation that the program has made the preeminent stage in all of college basketball.
The game was played on April 3, 2023, at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas. In the game, UConn defeated San Diego State 76–59 to win their fifth national championship in five appearances. Adama Sanogo of UConn was named Most Outstanding Player (MOP) of the Final Four.
FDU vs. Purdue in 2023 was only the second time the upset has happened. That means 16 seeds have a 1.28 winning percentage against 1 seeds in the NCAA tournament. No game had been decided by one possession since 1996 (Purdue beat Western Carolina, 73-71).
However, that midseason swoon cost UConn in terms of NCAA Tournament seeding. The Huskies ended up the No.13 overall seed, which is the top of the No. 4 seed line.
UConn has won six NCAA tournament championships (1999, 2004, 2011, 2014, 2023 and 2024), which puts the program in a tie for third most all time and is the most of any program since the tournament expanded to 64 teams.
The Boilermakers have reached three NCAA Tournament Final Fours and two NCAA championship games, but have not won an NCAA Championship. The 1931–32 team was retroactively named a national champion by the Helms Athletic Foundation and the Premo-Porretta Power Poll.
Dan Hurley rebuffed the Los Angeles Lakers' advances to stay the head coach of the Connecticut Huskies. UConn is seeking its third straight National Championship, which hasn't been done in 50+ years. For now, the Huskies are a top dog in the odds.
The title game is set for the women's NCAA March Madness tournament. The South Carolina Gamecocks will put their undefeated record on the line against Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes — and per usual, South Carolina is favored.
